Why is Ramadan Important for Muslims?

Thousands of praises and thanks be to Allah, that this year, too, we have reached the blessed Ramadan, the month of genius and mercy and forgiveness. It is not enough to take pride in being the ummah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAS), the sultan of the creatures and the prophet of the end times. Today, 650 million Muslims around the world are fasting in Ramadan, which is one of the five pillars of their lofty religion, and are trying to attain countless blessings and rewards that Allah will bestow upon them.

There are many reasons why the holy month of Ramadan has a very precious and distinguished place in the eyes of Muslims. We can list the important reasons that make Ramadan the sultan of the other eleven months of the year as follows:

1 — As long as this worldly life we live in continues, the obligation of fasting, which is one of the five principles of the religion of Islam, which humanity will be honored to embody, is observed and performed in this month. It was also made obligatory on previous ummahs. However, they have changed the duty of servitude, which we call fasting, into a kind of fasting. Fasting has become a complete and perfect worship only with Islam. Allah reveals this fact in the 183th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah as follows:

“O you who believe! Fasting has been made obligatory on you, as it was made obligatory on the nations before you. So that you are protected.”

The Importance of Ramadan

2 - Another virtue of the month of Ramadan is that the Qur'an, an eternal miracle of our Prophet, began to be revealed in this month. Allah tells us about this happy event as follows:

“Those numbered days are the month of Ramadan, in which the Qur'an was revealed. That Qur'an, which is the hidden guidance for mankind, is many clear proofs of the right way and the judgments that distinguish between right and wrong.[1].

3 — The tarawih prayer performed during the nights of Ramadan between the night prayer and the witr prayer is a special worship of this month. Tarawih is a full sunnah and consists of twenty rak'ahs. It is performed in congregation in mosques and homes. What a great stage it is for the believers who fast during the day to spend their nights in prayers that exalt them even more. The state of the believers, who fill the mosques in rows, is as if it is a tangible example of the unity and solidarity commanded by Islam.

4 — The alms of fitr, which Muslims with good livelihoods are obliged to give to their poor religious brothers, are also given during the month of Ramadan. Most of our wealthy people pay zakat, which is the best example of social solidarity, to people who need to be given religiously in this blessed month. The amount of zakat, which is a financial worship, is one-fortieth of the taxpayer's wealth. The institution of zakat is a divine security element that prevents possible unwarranted jealousy and hostility to wealth in the Islamic society.

Why is Ramadan Important?

5 — It is a fact that during the month of Ramadan, believers have more religious feelings and desire to learn, compared to other months. Other than tarawih prayers, other acts of worship are also effective for the little ones to fill their places of worship together with the adults. These; During Ramadan, they are the constant religious speeches that the preachers make in the pulpits and the recitations and hatims that the hafizes recite in mosques and at home. Believers listen to the religious speeches that take place before or after the prayer times and the recitation of our holy book, with great attention and awe. Thus, they both contribute to their religious knowledge and attain the happiness of listening to the word of Allah.

6 — One of the reasons that increase the importance of the month of Ramadan is the presence of the Night of Power, which is very important in Islam, in this month. The Qur'an, which is the word of Allah, began to be revealed on the night of Qadr. The 114th surah of the 99 surahs of the Qur'an is Surah Al-Qadr. In this surah, it is declared that the night of power is better than a thousand months. In this respect, there is no doubt that the worships to be performed on such a night will be very valuable and rewarding.

Virtue of the Month of Ramadan

One of the reasons why fasting, which is a bodily worship, is very valuable in the sight of Allah is that hypocrisy never interferes with this worship. Every believer who has reached the age of puberty will abandon eating, drinking and sexual pleasures during the month of Ramadan - just for the sake of Allah - from the time of dawn until sunset and will strive to fulfill one of their duties of servitude to their creator. Allah Almighty explains how rewarding worship is to fast in a hadith as follows: "For every good deed of a person, from ten to seven hundred times is rewarded, except fasting, because it is for Me, and I will reward it. ”

In one of his hadiths, the Prophet said; “A person who fasts during Ramadan while he is a believer and expects his reward only from Allah will be forgiven all his past sins”[2] they have ordered. This means that this month is a holy time when all Muslims pass a divine test and their patience and endurance are tested. Again, the Prophet said the following about those who fast:

Virtues of the Month of Ramadan

Allah Almighty said, “All the deeds of the Son of man are for himself, fasting is different from it, because it is for me and I will reward it.” Fasting is a shield. On the day when one of you fasts, let him not sin and shout. If someone insults him or wants to fight him fiercely, let him say, 'I am fasting'. I swear by Allah, who is in the power of Muhammad's soul, that the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better than the smell of musk in the sight of Allah on the Day of Judgment. There are two joys that please the fasting person: one is the joy when he breaks his fast, and the other is the joy when he is honored with the beauty of Allah because of his fast.”[3]

I wish Ramadan to be beneficial and fruitful to all my religious brothers, and I pray to Allah Almighty to bring us to many Ramadans in health and prosperity.
